AI NEWS 🗞️

Google update reveals AI will read all your private messages. Google's Bard AI, integrated into the Messages app, will analyze private messages to enhance user experience, personalizing interactions based on conversation context and relationship dynamics. This functionality raises privacy concerns, with messages being stored for 18 months and subject to cloud processing, including potential human review, albeit anonymized. This development marks a significant shift in smartphone privacy dynamics (Link)

Apple’s upcoming Siri and AppleGPT. Apple is developing an enhanced AI called "Apple GPT," aimed at upgrading Siri and other apps. Led by AI chief John Giannandrea, the project focuses on conversational AI with a new "Ajax" framework, which could offer advanced capabilities. However, Apple's focus on privacy might delay full integration, aiming for a broader AI rollout across its suite of apps by 2025. (Link)

Gen Z and Gen Alpha are morphing into Gen AI, as ChatGPT usage accelerates among kids. Qustodio's study on 400,000 families reveals parents' rising use of parental control tools. Top concerns include online safety, addiction, and cyberbullying. Parents debate when to start using controls, with some advocating for age 3 or younger. As technology and family life blend, challenges emerge in raising a digitally-native generation. (Link)

Google just settled its multi-billion dollar AI tech patent trial. Singular Computing's founder, Dr. Joseph Bates, claimed that Google used his patented technologies in its Tensor Processing Unit devices. While the settlement doesn't imply wrongdoing, Singular Computing had sought damages ranging from $1.6 billion to $5.19 billion. Google denied knowledge of the patents but acknowledged that Bates' inventions were "well suited" for their workloads. The settlement concludes the case. (Link)

AI aids in early detection of ovarian cancer. Researchers have developed a machine learning-based tool using serum metabolomic profiles, achieving 93% accuracy in diagnosing ovarian cancer. This model, analyzing samples from 431 patients and 133 controls, marks a significant step in personalized cancer diagnostics, moving beyond traditional binary testing methods. Funded by various cancer research foundations, this approach offers new possibilities in the early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer, emphasizing the integration of metabolomic data and AI technologies.(Link)

Elon Musk’s Twitter/X granted $10 million tax break for AI hardware in Georgia. The incentive, approved by the Development Authority of Fulton County for a $700 million project at a QTS facility, aims to retain the company's infrastructure in Atlanta. X, which purchased 10,000 GPUs for an AI project in 2023, had previously been denied the tax break. Despite most equipment already being in Atlanta, X suggested relocating the remainder to Portland without the tax break. The deal safeguards 24 existing jobs and is expected to generate over $16 million in new tax revenues over ten years. X has been revamping its infrastructure since acquiring Twitter in 2022, including downsizing in other locations and re-provisioning resources to different data centers. (Link)

THE NERD CORNER 🤓

Zero-shot Learning

Zero-shot learning is a machine learning approach where AI models are trained to recognize and categorize objects they haven't seen during training. It relies on the model's ability to generalize from known categories to unknown ones, using similarities and shared attributes. This technique is useful in situations where collecting or labeling extensive data for every category is impractical, allowing AI models to apply learned knowledge to new, unseen scenarios.
