A California bill to regulate A.I. causes alarm in Silicon Valley
California's bill SB 1047 seeks to prevent the misuse of large AI models that could lead to "critical harms," such as mass casualties or large-scale cyberattacks. The bill targets AI models costing over $100 million to train and mandates safety protocols, including an "emergency stop" button and third-party audits. A new agency, the Frontier Model Division (FMD), would oversee the regulations, with penalties for non-compliance reaching up to $30 million.
